New Zealand Travels: Art Imitates Life Part Five
After Josh and Gemma stay in the Banks Peninsula on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island (where some very hot and pivotal scenes take place) in Where Sea Meets Sky, they begin the journey up North towards Gemma’s family on the East Cape of the North Island. But before they get there, they stop in the town of Kaikoura.
I absolutely love Kaikoura…it’s where mountains meet sea…meet sky. This sleepy seaside town bustles with aquatic lovers, especially those wanting to take part on the wildlife trips – you can swim with dolphins in the wild (which I have done here), swim with seals, go spot Sperm whales in season on a supreme whale watching tour, or swim with sharks. In a cage. Sometimes I wonder why you’d have dolphin swimming in the same waters as shark diving but whatever.
Josh and Gemma don’t get to do all those things (I write realistically and sometimes life has other plans…such as bad weather that cancels your dolphin swimming trip) but they do get to go on an epic walk on the peninsula where Gemma has an epiphany of sorts (art-related…you’ll see). I did the same walk (turned out to be a four hour hike with no end in sight) but made for a very memorable experience. Here are some Kaikoura photos and what Josh and Gemma would have encountered:
