From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, a new novel about risking everything for love—and finding your heart somewhere between the truth and lies.
Auburn Reed has her entire life mapped out. Her goals are in sight and there’s no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to find a deep attraction to the enigmatic artist who works there, Owen Gentry.
For once, Auburn takes a risk and puts her heart in control, only to discover Owen is keeping major secrets from coming out. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything important to Auburn, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it.
The last thing Owen wants is to lose Auburn, but he can’t seem to convince her that truth is sometimes as subjective as art. All he would have to do to save their relationship is confess. But in this case, the confession could be much more destructive than the actual sin…
She deserves better. So much better.
She deserves me.
If only she knew that.
Beautiful, original and surprising, with all the feels, I absolutely loved this book! It’s got that unique Coho ‘feel’, with writing that is a fantastic mix of funny and dramatic with lots of emotion, twists that I did not see coming and an absolutely beautiful romance. The feels… OMG the feels! There’s not many books that have had me in tears just by reading the prologue! Needless to say, I was absorbed from the very beginning and struggled to put it down.
It’s one of those books best experienced without knowing too much beforehand so you can enjoy each little moment as the story unfolds, so I’m going to keep this vague.
Auburn has just moved to Dallas, Texas. At only 20, she has been through a lot, but her heart and mind are set on her goals and she is determined to do whatever she needs to do to meet them. She responds to a ‘help wanted’ notice at a local art gallery and finds herself spending the night working for Owen Gentry, artist and owner of the gallery who offers her work hostessing an event for him. Neither of them could have anticipated how their lives would change from their unexpected meeting.
I could tell her how I know her. Make her realize why I have this overwhelming urge to protect her. But some secrets I’ll take to my grave, and this is definitely one of them.
I love these characters! Auburn has been through hell, and is in a bad place, but she’s incredibly strong and still remains positive. And Owen is simply amazing! A bit quirky, he is so freaking funny, but from the very beginning you can tell he has a huge heart. From the moment that they meet there is fantastic chemistry between them, and you just know that they belong together. Their early banter is great, the sexual tension is zinging, and I revelled in each little interaction.
But they both have secrets. Big secrets which threaten to destroy the promise of something special that they have found together. And Owen’s past threatens to destroy everything that Auburn is working towards.
She deserves so much better than what I can give her. I don’t, however, think she deserves better than me. I think she would be perfect for me and I would be perfect for her, but all the bad choices I’ve made in my life are what she doesn’t deserve to be a part of.
I love the premise of this book. It’s so cleverly put together! Some of the twists I could pick, others were a huge surprise and sent the story off into a direction that I definitely wasn’t expecting. The more I read, the more absorbed I became in the story, and I honestly could not get enough of these characters. I was constantly trying to figure out what they were hiding and where it was all going to go. And OMG, it’s all played out so beautifully! My emotions were all over the place as I laughed, cried and squeed with each little development, and my heart broke for the impossible position that Auburn and Owen are both in.
“I’m scared I’ll never feel this again with anyone else,” I whisper.
He squeezes my hands. “I’m scared you will.”
The love story is fantastic! I could feel the incredible connection between Auburn and Owen, and even though their situations are difficult, it’s all so easy between them.
The story is told in alternating POV and I could completely understand where they were both at, and their reasons for doing all that they do. I particularly loved Owen’s acceptance of Auburn, and his need to do whatever he can for her.
She’s made her choice, and even though it’s not the choice either of us wants, it’s the only choice that works for her right now. And I have to respect that.
A word about the art – Owen’s paintings are depicted throughout the book in and considering the inspiration behind his art and the way he works, I thought this was a fantastic addition to the book. It brings an added dimension to Owen, and to the emotion behind his paintings.
This is an absolutely beautiful story! I laughed, I cried, I swooned and I squeed. I loved every single moment of it – even the ones that hurt and I delighted in all of the surprises along the way. My only complaint is that I would have loved an epilogue just to close the story off a little more, but I was very satisfied with the ending and finished the book with a big, goofy grin on my face.
I loved it – 4.5 stars.
