BOOK 2 in the Contracts & Deceptions Series by Claire Contreras
BOOK 1: The Devil’s Contract
BOOK 2: The Sinner’s Bargain
Which do you find the hardest to write, the first or the last line of your novel? Why?
The first, mainly because I am obsessed with first lines and it’s the opening sentence. It’s like a first impression. You have to get it right.
Which comes first in your writing process, the title, or the content of your story? (Do you always know what your book’s title is going to be?)
The content. I usually don’t know what my title is going to be until I’ve written a lot of the story.
Let’s talk character names. How do you go about selecting names for characters in your book?
Do the names you pick have any significance to you, or do you ever feel inspired by a name? I choose names by their meanings, so if you look up my character names they usually match the person in the story.
How do you plot your books, do you write it down on paper/index cards/etc, or do you write on the fly? Do you ever find that your plot changes as you write, or does it stay pretty close to how you planned it?
I suck at plotting. I do most of it in my head and start writing, which makes me run into a lot of trouble once I start complicating the plot. I’m going to try to start plotting. I say this every time.
Do you have any authors who inspire you or your writing style? If so, who?
I don’t think I have any that inspire my writing style. If I do, I haven’t noticed it. I’m inspired by good writing, so if I read something that resonates, I tend to want to create something better in my own stories. I always love reading things that make me take another look at my storylines or sentence structure. I have a handful of authors I can think of. Most recently, Barry Lyga.
What’s in your “Author Survival Kit”? (Pens, Caffeine, iPods, Prozac?)
Notebooks galore, pens, coffee, Spotify.
Do you have a favorite place to write? Tell us about it!
I have a writing chair that I got myself last year because I was sick of writing in bed (and also because I was spending entirely too much time at Starbucks), but I rarely use it which means I still spend entirely too much time at Starbucks. I go to this coffee shop called Pasion del Cielo when I can, that’s my favorite, but the thing is, I can’t finish a story there. I have ADD, so I mainly go there to check emails, it seems. There’s this specific Starbucks that I always end up at when I’m stuck in a story. It’s the funniest thing. I try to do all these things to get me out of my writer’s block, and when I go there it magically disappears. I should probably just write there all the time, but the people are a pain in the butt.
If you could use 3 words to describe your books, what would they be?
Suspenseful, sexy, intriguing … this is hard!!!
Do you have an “unchartered” genre that you’d like to write in? If so, which genre would it be?
It’s not really “unchartered”, but I really want to go back to my children’s books. I say this every time I finish a novel, and I mean it, but I am terrified of those books lol. They take a lot more out of me than romance, that’s for sure.
Do you have a favorite character/book that you’ve written?
My favorite character… I think Philip from The Devil’s Contract. He’s calculated and shady and you never really know which way is up with him. I’m a sucker for the ones you can’t figure out.
What are the top 3 things on your bucket list?
Go skydiving (probably won’t do it, but it’s there), go to San Diego Comic Con (yes), and Audition for a movie role.
If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Anything in curry, but preferably shrimp. My favorite is thai red curry.
What is something you never leave home without?
What is your favorite movie?
I have a couple and they’re all so different, but I’ll say Life is Beautiful
What are the last 3 books you enjoyed reading?
I Hunt Killers, The Game, and Blood of My Blood. That was easy lol.
What are 3 words you’d use to describe yourself?
Weird, sarcastic, loyal.
Do you have a favorite hobby/pastime?
Writing, eating, reading, playing superheroes with my kids.
Do you have a hidden talent? If so, what is it?
Not that I’m aware of. I guess it’s that hidden lol.
This or That?
Sunrise or Sunset?
Sunrise! Beginning of a new day. Unless it was a shit day and then I would choose sunset.
Coffee or Tea?
I hate tea.
Hot or Cold?
PC or Mac?
By Land, or by sea?
By land because I’m terrified of drowning.
Half-empty or Half-full?
Autumn or Spring?
Summer or Winter?
Eh… I live in Miami, we have summer and summer. I’ll choose winter because it’s “less hot”.
E-book or Print Book? (Preferred reading)
