With any great change, there is always strife, and the Covenant University has become the frontline between pure-bloods who want the Breed Order reinstated and the half-bloods who want the right to control their own destinies.
Fate has other plans.
The violence is escalating and war between the races seems inevitable, and it couldn’t come at a worse time. Hyperion may be out of commission, but Josie and Seth know they have only earned a reprieve. Seth must get Josie fully prepared, which means controlling her newfound abilities, and they need to find the other demigods before the Titans do.
But the gods are sensing a greater threat.
Only one thing is more dangerous than a bunch of starved Titans, and that’s an out-of-control Apollyon. The aether in Josie is drawing Seth in deeper, and when lust mixes with love and gives way to power, he knows being close to her is not only dangerous to her, but to everyone around them, but letting her go requires a level of selflessness that just isn’t Seth’s style.
The paths taken in the past are becoming the roads of the future.
Just as chaos breaks out, familiar faces from the past return, complicating the already strained bond between Josie and Seth, and when the danger from the Titans erupts with devastating consequences, the dark allure of power calls to Seth again, but this time Josie might not be able to pull him back.
And when the struggle between power and love becomes the deadliest battleground, there may be no salvation.
OMG! Once again, JLA has smacked it out of the park, giving us an action-packed, dramatic, funny and romantic story that is heaps of fun while still bringing the emotion, with lots of twists and turns to keep things exciting and moving at a great pace. I absolutely loved it!
If you haven’t read The Return, or the precursor Covenant series, be warned that this is going to be a bit spoilery.
Seth and Josie’s story picks up where The Return left off, with the two of them happy and together, living at the Covenant, and with Seth continuing to train Josie how to defend herself and how to control her newly-unleashed powers – the skills she’ll need to know in order to face the danger they know will soon be coming.
I love these two together! They tease and banter, they laugh and have fun, and the steamy time is really hot, but it’s not all happy times ahead. The more power Josie unleashes, the more her aether calls to Seth’s dark side, and his battle to control himself becomes harder and harder the closer they become. And then just to make things even more complex, the reappearance of Alex resurfaces old demons and throws him into even more turmoil.
And while Seth is facing his own battle and its inevitable impact on his relationship with Josie, on Covenant grounds the pure-bloods and half-bloods are in a constant state of tension, with the violence continuing to escalate. The danger is real, and they are right in the middle of it, but that proves to be the least of their problems as their search for the unidentified demi-gods really kicks up, and they take off to find them…. with deadly Titans hot on their trail.
It’s all action from start to finish, and it blends in brilliantly with the mythical theme of the series, as well as the personal drama that is playing out between Seth and Josie. There is some angst, but it’s really well done and doesn’t become OTT as they deal with their issues and find their common ground. And I have to say, seeing Seth in a relationship is absolutely sensational! While the Covenant series is YA, this one is most definitely in the NA category, and seeing Seth unleash his sexed-up, alpha hotness is quite the experience! *fans self*.
But their relationship is so much deeper than just panty-melting sexy time, the emotion between them builds beautifully, and while Seth struggles to recognise and understand what he’s feeling, Josie truly loves him, and she is determined to stand by his side. Her love for him and her strength and commitment to him is beautiful, and I loved watching their relationship develop.
I had to prove that what he believed wasn’t true. Prove that he was the total of everything he had done and not the dark things he was ashamed of, and I would do so because I loved him and accepted him for who he was, for all his faults. That was what love meant.
And even with the intensity of everything that is happening, this book is SO freaking funny! The snark and sarcasm is almost constant, and had me laughing out loud so many times! The dynamics between the characters are fantastic, and whether it’s intentional put-downs or teasing banter, the back-and-forth is absolute gold!
“I know. I know. Seeing me, the Hercules, is hard to believe, that such a legend could be-”.
“I know this is hard to believe … but I don’t care, and if you could, like, I don’t know, eat shit and shut the fuck up, I’d be forever grateful.”
I loved being back in this world. JLA has developed an interesting and exciting paranormal world, and has filled it with brilliant characters that kept me constantly entertained. Seth is incredible all on his own, Josie is fantastic, and there’s lots of time with Deacon, Luke, Apollo and newly introduced and totally hilarious Hercules-the-douche. And the much-anticipated return of Alex and Aiden brings some added awesome to the mix.
The story builds brilliantly to an epic showdown which is both exciting and devastating (*sniff*), and which is going to have huge repercussions for the rest of the series. It does end on a cliffhanger (GOD DAMMIT!), and I’d definitely be reaching for the next book if it was available, so fingers crossed the wait isn’t going to be too long. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
I loved it – 4.5 stars.
