The New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled books returns with the third romance in the Legal Briefs series, a collection of sexy novels about first crushes, second chances, and the final verdict of the heart.
When Brent Mason looks at Kennedy Randolph, he doesn’t see the awkward, sweet girl who grew up next door. He sees a self-assured, stunning woman…who wants to crush the most intimate—and prized—parts of his anatomy beneath the heels of her Louboutins.
When Kennedy looks at Brent, all she sees is the selfish, Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue–worthy teenager who humiliated her in high school in order to join the popular crowd. A crowd that made those years a living hell for her.
But she’s not a lovesick social outcast anymore—she’s a Washington, DC, prosecutor with a long winning streak. Brent is the opposing attorney in her next case, and Kennedy thinks it’s time to put him through a little hell of his own.
But things aren’t exactly working out the way she planned. Brent has his sights set on Kennedy, and every fiery exchange only makes him want her more—and makes her wonder if he’s as passionate in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom. In the end, they may just find themselves in love…or in contempt of court.
“I am in love with you. When I look at you, think about you, I can’t decide if I want to fuck you, strangle you, or just hold you in my arms. Usually all three. And if that’s not love, I don’t know what is”
AAAAAAAHH, I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
Hot, funny, and so, so romantic – 5 stars!
This book combines two of my favourite romantic set ups – enemies-to-lovers and a second-chance-romance, and it’s done brilliantly! Once again Emma Chase has told the story through the voice of her hilariously charming hero, and I honestly loved every single moment of it! I was sucked in from the very first page and I highlighted like crazy, reading it in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down.
While it forms the third and final instalment of the Legal Briefs series, it could technically be read as a standalone, though I recommend reading the other books first. Not only are they great reads, but knowing the characters and their stories beforehand will definitely make this book more enjoyable. But Brent and Kennedy’s story stands strong on its own and I absolutely loved it!
I love Brent! Cocky and self-assured, he’s a very successful criminal defence attorney and a bit of a comic book geek (which I love). He cherishes his friends and family, and lives his life free and easy without any romantic entanglements, just the way he wants it. He is the last-remaining single man in his group of friends and business partners – Stanton, Sofia and Jake have all paired off in previous books of the series – and I have been eagerly anticipating the chance to see the manwhoring commitment-phobe meet his match. And OMG, this hook up is sensational!
I used to have a way with women.
If the word fuck came out to play, it was always followed by /me and then words like harder, please, and my friend, more.
Those were the days.
Brent and Kennedy grew up next door to each other in their privileged neighbourhood. The best of friends throughout their childhood, they drifted apart as teens at the same exclusive boarding school, but they did share one life-changing night together when they were 17 before it all went horribly wrong and they parted ways. 14 years later and Kennedy is back in town, all grown up, beautiful and successful. Brent is dumbstruck to be back in the presence of ‘the one that got away’, and even more so when he learns that she is the prosecutor on his current case.
Kennedy is still brimming with anger over all that went down in high school, and she’s not had an easy time of it while they’ve been apart. She is a ball-breaking attorney who is thrilled to be taking Brent on in the courtroom, but she wants nothing to do with him outside of it unless it means getting him back for how he treated her all of those years ago.
She’s pissed off, he wants her and is happy for any kind of reaction, and the arguing and banter is epic!
She looks me straight in the face. “I could never be with someone like you – you have the maturity of a twelve-year-old boy.”
I raise my glass. “And you have the chest of one.”
I expect her to come back with a clever, biting retort, but she just gestures to me with an open palm. “I rest my case.”
Ironically, my first instinct is to stick my tongue out at her. But I won’t give her the satisfaction.
The chemistry is sensational. I laughed so hard at their outbursts (inside and outside of the courtroom), all of it with an underlying sexual tension that builds brilliantly with each interaction. And when Brent decides he’s had enough and he needs to make his move, OMG, the moment is epic! And from there, the humour is intermingled with Brent showing just how beautifully swoony and romantic he can be.
“I’ve never forgotten you, sweetheart. Not even close.”
This is an absolutely gorgeous love story! And I love how such a funny book can have so much heart. Kennedy’s past experiences have left her fragile and wary of relationships, but Brent’s determination to make up for his past mistakes and be there for her, and his confidence to win her over despite her vulnerability is beautifully heart-warming.
“I’m not going to let us fall this time, Kennedy.”
Her eyes are back on my chest. “I’m not sure–”
“All you have to do is take my hand.”
The development of the relationship is slow and steady, with Brent holding nothing back from Kennedy, and the way he’s willing to put himself out there for her is absolutely beautiful.
“I’m in love with you. And if it takes awhile for you to wrap your head around that – to wrap your heart around it – then I’ll wait. Because you’re worth waiting for. You always were.”
“You’re everything I’ve been searching for, before I even knew I was looking.”
And, of course, there is lots of sexy time, and it is so, so hot!!!!!
“Brent…” She gasps, fingers running through my hair. “This is real. Tell me this is real.”
My eyes jerk up to hers and I cup her jaw in one hand. “It’s real. This is so real I can’t stop shaking.”
I loved it, I loved everything about it!! It’s sweet and sexy, beautifully romantic and funny as all hell. It’s not always easy, and Kennedy does take a bit of convincing, but it’s not angsty in any way, and the way it all unfolds is realistic and functional, and so, so entertaining. And Brent’s narration of the whole thing is gold!
I want to figure her out, to learn every part of her – the soft curves, the sharp edges, the dark, shadowy corners she tries so hard to hide. I want to break down her doors, climb her ivory tower. I want to slay all her fucking dragons.
She probably won’t appreciate it at first – but eventually she’ll come around. It’ll be great.
The characters from the previous books all play a part in the story, and I loved the chance to catch up with them and see some progression for them and their relationships. And Brent and Kennedy’s families add a great dynamic (the family dinner scene had me laughing so hard!). There is some drama, but it’s handled really well and it’s all finished off with a great epilogue which left me with a big smile on my face. And THEN, there’s an extended epilogue set some years into the future which finishes the series beautifully.
I have really enjoyed this series, and this book was a great way to finish it off. Funny, romantic and beautifully heart-warming, I absolutely loved it!
